In 2012, I was not a digital marketing consultant but a college graduate working full-time as a Burger King Manager. Only bringing home $250 a week. I really wanted to get a job in digital marketing so I could make more money. Also, to afford a nice place to live, and have the peace of mind brought on by financial security. Writing is my talent, and I was excited by the competitiveness of the industry.

I become a strong advocate for “pay for performance,” due to my experience working at Burger King. What I really wanted was a career where I could earn according to the value I provided. Just about anybody what I could accomplish in a 40-hour week at one fixed price. I wanted more.

My Pre-Digital Marketing Consultant Days!

The thing is, I couldn’t find a job…despite having a college degree, I did not have hands-on experience with digital marketing. Nobody was calling me back. I still felt trapped in the rat trace, pushing buttons on a touch screen and letting my talents lay dormant. To make things worse, I didn’t believe that I deserved a place in digital marketing. I struggled with my confidence so I felt even worse about the situation. People who did not want to better their lives surrounded me. The uncertain future terrified me. The future terrified me.

If You Can’t Stand the Heat, Get Out of the Kitchen (Literally)….

I only had a few months to find somewhere to live and that was a big problem I was facing. My current living arrangement had me already illegally staying in an apartment with 8 other people. Worst of all, my roommate had twins on the way. I knew that my living arrangement was not permanent. I had no other choice but to get a higher-paying job and get one fast. Employers followed up every job application with a rejection letter or worse, no response at all.

Then, as if by chance (but I think it was the law of attraction), something amazing happened…

One night I decided to sign up for a freelancing website that my friend’s mom told me about. She knew that I liked to write and had found her own success, so I figured, “what the heck.”

Before I knew it, someone took a chance on me, and I made $500 in a few days! All for writing a book (as opposed two weeks on my Burger King salary!)

It was now crystal clear to me how to leverage my talents to make the kind of money I deserved.

I also learned that a company doesn’t need to put you on payroll for you to be successful; you just need to find clients with a need that you can fulfill better than anyone else. This can help you make money.

As a result I decided to stop wasting my time with unresponsive employers who judged me based off a resume. I officially become a freelance writer who provided massive value and award-winning results to those who needed it.

After I did that, clients started flooding my inbox. They wanted to pay me for my services, despite knowing nothing about me!

Suddenly, I was making enough money to cover rent on my new house and even buy a car. Plus, I liked what was doing. I was good at it, and what I knew that not many other people could do it. My confidence skyrocketed.

From Burger King to Business Owner

That’s when I realized that there was more to digital marketing than content writing. If I really dove in head-first, I could expand upon my talents. Become a true expert in helping small businesses. I could help grow their brand, attract traffic, and generate conversions no matter what they’re selling.

As a result of all this I have been able to achieve the following as a digital marketing consultant:

I helped a client retire to Florida by writing his best-selling Amazon Kindle eBooks over a 3-year period.

I took another client’s website from no organic traffic to a 550% increase ( 3,000% increase in organic keyword rankings) over an 11-month period. I did this by revamping the sales copy on his website and writing a series of blogs.
